Meet The Human Trafficking Survivor Who Is Now Saving Lives Of Many
Shandra Woworuntu was born and brought up in Indonesia. As she stepped into the real world, she realized that there were no good jobs for her in her home country. So, she decided to move overseas as she had been always been convinced by the idea of The American Dream.
But the real world outside her home was nothing like she had imagined, in fact, it was far from anything one can imagine. Her life took a drastic turn and landed in a place that was toxic and jarring to senses.
The man who was supposed to give her work and guide her in the new city turned out to be corrupt and heartless. She sensed that something was wrong as soon as he picked her up from the airport. But the extent of the struggle was unimaginable at that point in time. The life waiting ahead of her was no less than a nightmare.
She was taken into a room that was filthy and messy with weird stuff lying around. The man who had enslaved Woworuntu pointed a gun straight at her head and told her that she owed him 30,000 dollars and the only way out of it was to sell her body.
Her sufferings had just begun as a victim of human trafficking and she could not see any light. She was held captive and her body was tortured day in day out. This continued for months and all she wanted to do was, escape from that abuse and kept planning for the same.
Finally, the day came when she could put her plans to work and become free. She used her martial arts skills to fight her captor and ran to the police for further help.
She was appreciated for her bravery and even rewarded. Not only did she save herself from those abusive and dangerous people, but also saved lives of all other woman held captive at that place.
The first thing Woworuntu wanted to do after coming out of days of sufferings was to help others who have experienced similar hardships and pain in their lives. She was highly motivated about her new mission and living a new life.
But things were not easy in the beginning. The stories she heard were agonizing and painful. Many of these women did not have skills to get a job but Woworuntu was determined to teach them cooking which she did at her own home. Her cooking class grew bigger and better and became a nonprofit Mentari (which means “sun” in Indonesian).
Since then, she has come a long way and helped as many as 300 people. She was named a Women of Worth by L’Oréal Paris in 2017. She aims at making human trafficking a thing of past and to accomplish this dream very soon.
We want to live in a world where only love and peace exist. With more people like Shandra Woworuntu, this world can definitely be a better place to live in!
