First US Woman To Space-Walk Also First In Reaching Deepest Ocean Point

Inspiring April, 26, 2024

Dr. Sullivan, a 68-year-old is a former NASA astronaut. Dr. Sullivan made the expedition with her pilot Victor Vescovo. The target of the expedition was to reach the deepest ocean point which is located at an estimate of 7 miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Their expedition lasted about 5 hours, and they reached 10,925 meters below the surface. The expedition was solely funded by the explorer, Victor L. Vescovo.

Dr. Sullivan’s achievement made her the only person in the world to walk in space and reach the deepest point. After reaching this feat, Dr. Sullivan tweeted, “36 years after my spacewalk, I became the first woman to dive to the deepest known spot in the ocean – The Challenger Deep. #WorldOceansDay”

Our planet Earth has several lowest seabed recesses. The Challenger Deep is located in a muddy depression of the Mariana Trench. The expedition vehicle was a specially designed deep-sea research submersible called the Limiting Factor. The team spent an hour and a half on the seabed and collected many images. The team took 4 hours to ascent back to the surface and dock to a ship.

The company that organized the logistics of the mission was EYOX Expeditions. They reported that Dr. Sullivan emerged from the 35,810-foot dive on Sunday. Dr. Sullivan and Vescovo celebrated their achievement by calling the astronauts aboard the International Space Station, which is located 254 miles above the Earth.

Dr. Sullivan gave a statement citing her achievement. She said, “As a hybrid oceanographer and astronaut this was an extraordinary day, a once in a lifetime day, seeing the moonscape of the Challenger Deep and then comparing my notes with my colleagues on the ISS about our remarkable reusable inner-space outer-spacecraft.”

Making history and carrying out scientific researches, both are equally important. Both help us in the future to carry out actions. With the help of them, we get to know about the various outcomes of the actions already taken or which might be taken.

We would like to congratulate the team, Dr. Sullivan, Vescovo, and EYOX Expeditions on their successful expedition. Their research will definitely help us towards building a better tomorrow. For Dr. Sullivan, it wasn’t just the science that made a big deal but also history. She holds two records, that’s just amazing.
