Elderly Man Is World ‘Record Holder’ For Maximum Platelet Donations

Inspiring April, 23, 2024

In the year 1957 when Martin Luther King Jr addressed the audiences of Montgomery, Alabama he mentioned that life’s most persistent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’ signaling at the importance of peace, coexistence and universal brotherhood. Most people do not have the answer to this but one man named Jim Kahlman not only found the perfect answer but also set an example for the masses to follow. It all started with his will to create the world record for maximum donations and so did it happen. Kahlman now holds the Guinness World Record for donating his platelets the highest number of times.

“Platelets are tiny discs like a structure in our blood that form blood clots acting as bricks to block open wounds and holes, the mortar then develops around it to quicken healing,” said Dr. Joanne Becker, a pathologist at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Roswell Park, Buffalo, New York. Cancer patients often lack these and this is where nice people like Jim come in. The man started donating along with his dad in the year 1970 at the age of 23 and it quickly became a routine. Back in the days, there were a total of fifty-two donations allowed in a year and so he went every week.

“I have sat on a donation chair over 1500 times which is a grand sum of 187 gallons of platelets, I often get choked up while conversing about it, you get to meet the person you’ve impacted and it’s beautiful,” said Kahlman. “We cannot be thankful enough to these donors, especially Kahlman who comes to the center regularly after traveling for 2-3 hours, the entire system of chemotherapy would lapse without them and even if there was any people wouldn’t survive it” added Dr. Becker.

Jim’s daughter Torey Hirsch who was just 23 too died of cancer but her father forever continues the noble deed. She was a proud daughter who appreciated her father for his selfless journey as a donor. “Giving is the perfect way of living and not just existing” said Kahlman and we couldn’t agree more.
