Airlines Take Some Great Steps To Pave Path For More Female Pilots, A Positive Change Lies Ahead

Level Up May, 08, 2024

An image of a woman as a pilot seemed far-fetched a few years back, but this has changed as more women are stepping into the aviation industry. We can’t deny the role of airlines in this as their encouragement has made this possible to a large extent.

The numbers have increased but there is still a long way to go. This definitely requires effort from both the sides, this can never be done single-handedly!

Alaska Airlines have taken a vow to get the number of African American female pilots up by 2025. This is something that happened recently and is highly appreciated.

Sisters of the Skies are being roped in as partners by the Alaska Airlines to accomplish this task. Both Alaska Airlines and Horizon Airlines are on the path to achieve this target. Six years and we will witness a change!

The two airlines currently have four female African American pilots which raised many questions. The airline stated, “Unfortunately, there isn’t a pool of qualified African American women ready to be hired. And creating this pool takes time.” They believe recognition of talent is the hack here and building a better environment begins from there.

Women in Aviation International conducted a review in 2017 to get hold of the statistics and it was concluded that six percent of the pilot population is women which is not good news. Considering the other jobs apart from aviation, women are breaking the stereotypes everywhere which is what this world needs right now.

There is a day in the month of October dedicated to celebrate the Girls in Aviation which we believe is spreading the message that holds great importance.

There is no stone left unturned to achieve this vision of more and more women pilots. Even scholarship programs are implemented to make this path easier. International Society of Women Airline Pilots has put in place one such program.

JetBlue Foundation is encouraging women by providing education focused on aviation and flight industry. They are creating awareness about this career option with one amazing program “Fly Like a Girl” and it is highly recommended for the girls in the age group of 8-14 years.

Another step was taken by easyJet with their Amy Johnson Flying Initiative which aims at getting more women hired as pilots. In one year, they wish to increase it by 20 percent. A constant dedication towards this goal will make it happen!

All the parts of this world are making equal contributions in this area and we are starting to see some positive results. Ethiopian Airlines took one step ahead in 2019 when the entire crew consisted of females in the flight from Addis Ababa to Oslo.

International Women’s day is also a great opportunity to motivate women on this road. Taking one step at a time and we will enter a better future!
