Talking about his experience , Brian said that he used to attend his school in coexistence with his fellow mates however at the age of 16 he decided to leave because he could not live another day by remaining a target of the bullies.

He was bullied in various ways such as his fellow mates criticized him, ripped up his homework, pushed him in the halls and shoved him off into the lockers. He shared that he used to like to raise his hand in the class, which other kids did not like and hence they teased him by naming him as ‘brainiac’. He was never called out by his name. Students called him by saying ‘shrimp’ and ‘runt’. Kids even pushed him into the hallways and threw his books on the floor. Brian studied economics at home and this ignited the bullies and they called him ‘sissy’.

But this man couldn’t bear it anymore when the bullies shoved him into one of the school lockers and he was stuck for an hour and a half before a custodian heard him screaming and kicking at the door. Brian never went to school after this heart breaking incident.

He started to train as a dance teacher and balanced his career with his position as a courier for 21 years. But sadly, his marriage broke down and he lost his job and eventually became homeless. His mental health declined and he was admitted to psychiatric facility for four months in 2015. He revealed how he had given up on his life and how forced he was to look himself in the mirror for the first time.

Gradually, he was quite motivated by his mental health support worker to register to Winnipeg Adult Education Centre and finally attain his high school diploma. The Canadian started his school in September 2016 and started attending his classes five days a week and four hours a day. In his first semester he opted for math, science and English classes.

Brian also shared that it has been a long and a very emotional journey for him. He missed his parents. He was thinking to study drama and theatre in the University but at the same time he was planning to become a teacher. He said that he had learnt so much not only in academics but otherwise. It was a special day for him.
