When a baby is born it brings a huge amount of happiness and joy to the parents. The room lights up as the baby cries. That’s a happy cry we guess! Doctors who are present in the delivery room and who are responsible for carrying out a successful delivery have seen the emotions flow inside. Dr. Carey Andrew-Jaja is no different as he has witnessed a lot during his 40 years of medical practice.

Andrew-Jaja followed an amazing tradition of singing to the babies as they arrived. This “tradition” was passed on to him by an older obstetrician-gynecologist. He later revealed about this and said “There was a gentleman an older obstetrician-gynecologist on staff and he loved to sing. And later on when he was about to retire he asked me ‘Andy do you sing to your babies?’ And I said ‘Well no. It’s your stuff’.”

He further told “And he said ‘Go ahead do it.’ So I took it over. He passed on the baton to me. And I took it over and I started to sing to my babies ever since then and I do it every time.” We are glad that this man took this step and began singing to his babies! This obstetrician-gynecologist worked at the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh for 40 years and earned great respect and love for the unique way he follows to welcome the little ones! As he retired from this field a day was dedicated to him. Pittsburgh honored the doctor on May 16 by naming it “Jaja Day”.

He expressed his thankfulness “There’s a joy when people perform this way to honor the baby the parents. I’m happy that the city recognized that.” He cheered everyone up for so many years and now it was time for him to receive admiration for the beautiful work he did.

His melodious voice uplifted the hospital environment as he sang “Happy Birthday” or “What A Wonderful World” on the baby’s arrival! He never missed a delivery without singing one of those songs.

His OB patients are all praise for this man and his adorable gesture. One of the last patients that he attended Lindsay Grimes had all nice things to say about Andrew-Jaja. She said in an interview “He has the most beautiful voice and of course he includes their name and ends the song with ‘Welcome to our beautiful world Luella’ which brought me to tears because it is such a beautiful world.”

He believes that singing is a wonderful way of forming a bond with the newborn and the family. His belief is true to a great extent as many parents call their kids ‘Jaja baby’ and we all know it’s a result of his kind gesture! He revealed “When I’m singing to those babies I think I’m singing to a future important person. That’s the credit I give to all of them.”

We hope the “singing doctor” passed the baton to a few more doctors before leaving. The babies deserve the song on their entry into this world!
