Pub Owner Pushed Reopening Date To Save Bird’s Nest

Inspiring April, 20, 2024

The law of coexistence illuminates the vibrant sphere of Mother Nature. Giving enough space for the survival of every living being is the cornerstone of life on this planet. However, there are only a handful of noble souls who absorb the fact in letter and spirit. One of them is the owner of The Volunteer Tavern pub- Peter Gibbs in Bristol.

With the slew of measures shooting in to ease lockdown restrictions on restaurants and pubs from July 4 in Britain, The Volunteer Tavern pub in Bristol has decided to keep her doors shut for the public. They have decided not to leverage the easing out of the economic sphere keeping in mind the dangers still hovering around. However, their decision does not only flow from their concerns for their human counterparts but also a feathery creature.

Peter Gibbs grabbed the efforts of a bird building a nest on the roof of the pub earlier. She managed to complete the task and laid down eggs there to wait for her little nuggets. However, her hard work got down the drain as a magpie cast an evil eye on her eggs and destroyed her budding family. But the bird did not lose all her hopes. Not just that, Nature also turned up to offer it helping hand with restrictions putting a brake on the activities in the pub.

She took advantage of the tranquility prevailing in the garden of the pub. The feathery creature landed in the green patch to build her nest and laid down her eggs. Soon, one of the staff members spotted the nest with three vibrant eggs ensconcing in it. The word of her presence reached the owner. The bird then got a name- ‘Mama Mint’ from the staff members. The pub people gathered to decide on their stance in the unlock phase.

Taking stock of the discomfort and perils that would endanger the survival of the bird and her kids, they decided to keep their doors shut for the public. They wanted to give the required time and peace to the budding ones to let them make their way in the world. Not just that, the owner also saw the coming relaxations too early with the fear of contracting the virus still hanging around. He also did not want to imperil the lives of his employees.

Taking on the bird, Peter Gibbs said, “Earlier this year a bird made a nest up on the roof of the pub but sadly her eggs were attacked by a magpie a few days later”.

Adding to that, he said, “Our garden is usually packed with people but as the pub’s been closed for the past three months, she must have thought it seemed like a very protected and peaceful area to build a new nest”.

Sharing their concerns, he said, “We decided that if we’re so worried about disturbing her when there’s only 10 of us in the garden, how are we going to open the pub up to the public and keep people away from her?”

Hopefully, the birdies would have seen the light of life.
