Husband Made An Off-Road Wheelchair For His Adventurous Wife

Level Up April, 20, 2024

Zach and Cambry Nelson have been married for a while, and Cambry is paralyzed. Usually, she doesn’t feel any limitations while exploring new places, and the wheelchair has been her great friend. But the hassle came when she started to have shoulder pain during these trips. So, to get her out of the trouble, Zach created a much needed off-roading wheelchair.

With the thick tires and putting two electric bikes together with a seat, the new wheelchair made sure that Cambry doesn’t have the same pain again. They called it “Not a Wheelchair,” and their idea proved to be yet another alternative, which was also reliable. Since Cambry couldn’t get ahead for more adventurous trips, Zach made this DIY wheelchair to help her explore.

When they realized that they had made something unique, it was time for the wheelchair’s mass-production. The vehicle comes with a battery that can help it go as far as 10 to 20 miles. Also, with the help of two cells, it can cover more than 25-35 miles with a maximum speed of 12 mph. Moreover, the rear rack is capable of holding coolers, camping gears, or a picnic basket.

Still, there’s a query about why they needed to make one when there are off-road wheelchairs readily available in the market. The reason is that they are, in no way, budget-friendly and would cost you around $10,000 or even more than that. Also, they aren’t as fast as “Not A Wheelchair.” While building it up, Zach ensured that it was fair enough to fit through the doorways and at the back of vehicles like trucks, jeep, etc.

Besides, there’s also an option to customize it with your favorite color while buying. It is also made of the bike parts, so there’s no trouble to take it anywhere but just a regular repair shop. Cambry said on her Instagram: “There are things I’ve never done before. Things I stopped thinking about doing because at one point I thought I couldn’t,” and that the chair Zack made her completely changed her attitude. Since taking it off-road, she says, “I like to think it’s just more proof that obstacles can always be overcome, sometimes it just takes a new perspective, a creative mind, and a lot of perseverance.”

Although this vehicle is still not good on the loose snow or sand, the couple is looking forward to fixing all the issues and make it available in the market again.
