Your appearances don’t make you the person you are, your attitude towards life and people speaks volumes about the kind of human being you are. Lizzie Velasquez is one such person who proves this statement is absolutely true.
Lizzie Velasquez was born with a rare disorder, neonatal progeroid syndrome because of which she is unable to gain any weight leading to an aged appearance. This disorder affected her muscle tone, brain, heart, face, eyes and bones. It was all fine until she had to go to school and be with other kids.
She was only 5-years old when she had a terrible experience as her classmates pushed her away because of the way she looked. It was definitely something she had never expected but this world is a difficult place to sustain and it just got harder for her.
Her parents were always supportive of her and kept telling her that there is nothing wrong in the way she looks. She is beautiful in every way and she should not allow anyone to tell her otherwise.
As she got older, she had realizations about her syndrome and that she is going to stay the same for the rest of her life. But life had some further struggles in store for her. When she appeared on a TV show a few years ago, she was judged and mocked by the majority. She found her video online and scrolled through the comments which were as inhuman and brutal as they can get. People were being hard-hearted by telling her to kill herself for the good of this world.
She wanted to see some light in this dark world and wished for at least one comment, one person who stood beside her. She wanted someone to say “She’s a child, leave her alone,” or “You don’t know her story, why she looks like that.” But no one did that and all she could do was cry and feel bad. She was labeled the “ugliest woman in the world.”
But that video changed her life for good as now she knew what she is supposed to do to make people take back their harsh opinions and also make them realize how it feels to be at the receiving end of such savage comments. She stood up stronger and gained courage to face this world.
She became a motivational speaker and anti-bullying activist and has never looked back since then. She gave a TED talk in 2013 which was highly appreciated and is now one of the most-watched videos.
She never let people decide who she is and took full control of her life. She did not let bad comments put her down in any way. She has motivated so many people to be themselves and be confident no matter what. She inspires many and is a living proof that looks are never a defining factor of a person.
