Colorado Teen Became Time Magazine’s First-Ever ‘Kid Of The Year’

Inspiring April, 20, 2024

A few are the moments that fall upon once in ages to create history. The worldly titles spin up to bestow the Good Samaritans with the encouragement and acknowledgement to keep their things going. As a result, many initiatives are running around that look ahead for painting the vibrant narratives. A 15-year-old girl named Gitanjali Rao has cherished her moment recently with her name echoing in the hearts across the globe.

The social musketeer from Colorado has identified and realized the purpose of her life from a very young age. Following the conscience signals, she started making good of her time and efforts to contribute to the ebbing of worldly woes. The bright girl soaked herself in the minutes of technology to look and work out for the problems facing the world. She kept her mind and ears in tunes with the fateful incidents transpiring across the globe.

At the age of 12, she cherished the smaller version of her present-day fame. She got the title of being America’s Top Young Scientist in 2018. The accolades floated in for her device- Thetys. It could detect lead in water. The water crisis in Flint (Mich) nudged her to come up with the device.

Finally, her continuous efforts managed to catch the heed of the Time magazine curators. After tussling with more than 5000 nominees, she has won the first-ever Time Magazine Kid of the Year. Well, she did not receive the news straight away.

Making it special for her, the Academy Award-winning actor and UN humanitarian ambassador- Angelia Jolie broke the news to her over Zoom. Gitanjali of Lone Tree, Co. was on cloud nine. She could not believe the judgment for a few minutes. The news spread around the world like fire. Congratulatory messages began to pour in for her, and the world started beholding her with awe.

Her “exceptional leadership” has rung in the hearts around the world. Shedding light on the life-changing moment, she shared, “It was exciting. All my friends are really excited, they’ve been freaking out about it all day, as have I – as I should – and it’s just such a surreal exciting, exciting experience”.

She has called it “surreal”. Taking on the role and potential of technology in solving the societal problems, she said, “I think there’s so much we can do with technology; we just have to apply it in the right way and that’s really what I wanted to start doing”.

Adding to that, she said, “The whole situation (of the STEM School shooting), if anything, it motivated me to keep doing more – and not just more in terms of using technology, doing more in terms of helping people and just growing as a person”.

Not just that, she also wishes to guide others. Taking on that, she shared, “I think, if you start with a question of what you’re passionate about and what you like, everything will fall into place … if anybody wants to change the world, for those of you watching who want to make a positive impact, just start with what you’re passionate about and then dive deep”.
